Although IPL is often referred to as ‘laser’ hair removal, unlike laser treatments which have one wavelength, IPL has multiple wavelengths of light. These scatter across the skin, eradicating the hair follicle from which individual hairs develop preventing them from re-growing.
IPL is suitable for any skin type and we recommend a course of six to nine treatments to target all the hairs in the hair growth cycle. A full course of treatments results in a permanent reduction in hair growth; however, this depends on individual skin tone and hair colour which will be discussed at your consultation. An annual maintenance session is recommended to keep skin smooth and hair free.
A cool gel is applied to the area being treated to allow the IPL head to move smoothly across your skin. You’ll also be asked to wear protective goggles to protect your eyes during the session. As the head moves across the skin it pulses light energy which is absorbed by the pigment (colour) in the hair transforming into heat energy and destroying the hair root.
The treatment is not painful, but you may feel a prickly sensation as the IPL head passes over your skin. Your skin may also feel warm.
Over the course of treatments, hair will appear visibly reduced and skin will feel smooth and even. Immediately after IPL hair removal, your skin may appear slightly red so a cooling aloe vera gel is applied. Any redness generally subsides quickly so it’s fine to go about your normal activities.
